Outback Vehicle Recovery

Our Story

Outback Vehicle Recovery was born in Alice Springs in the early 1980s to fulfil a need to provide motorists in Central Australia with a reliable towing service. It quickly became obvious that a vehicle recovery division was needed to assist travellers requirements. Break-downs were common, the road was unsealed between Pimba and the SA/NT border.

Opportunity knocked in late 1982 when the Automobile Association of N.T came searching for a reliable roadside assistance contractor. Within a year, other roadside agency’s were also in our busy schedule.

September 1985 saw a request from Police and Emergency Services for Outback Vehicle Recovery to provide much-needed services in the region. Services including; motor vehicle repairs, road-side assistance, towing, vehicle relocation, roadside subscriptions, membership transfers, touring information, road condition information, the issue of international driving permits, and distribution of Desert Park Pass’ (SA), to name just a few services which continue to keep us busy 24/7.

By the mid-1980s, enquiries were being received to move just about anything; generator sets for power and water, earthmoving equipment for contractors and station owners, general haulage were added to our daily services, as well as deliveries to aboriginal communities.

By late 2017 a well know local family (Fritz, Denise, Jimmy Hapke) took over the business and relocated to 33 Cameron Street, Alice Springs to continue the journey. Early 2020 they have added an Iveco Stralis prime mover and a Steelbro Side Loader and started working with Linfox moving containers 20’- 40’ on a daily basis.

Becoming Infra-Build metal agents resulted in the recycling of all ferrous and non-ferrous metals, car bodies. The result today is a versatile business involving roadside assistance, vehicle recovery, vehicle relocation and recycling. Road trains are kept busy relocating hire cars between Ayers Rock and Alice Springs. Power and Water requests are met using tilt-tray trucks, trailers and some road-train configurations. We also relocate containers, demountables, mining equipment, earthmoving equipment, screening plants, scissor lifts, boom lifts, buses and more!
